Network Solutions is the absolute worst registrar I’ve used in twenty years of buying domain names.  My experience runs from 2018 to 2019 with only one domain name, I was skeptical of them and bought just the one address as a test and they failed in every opportunity and then some.  I say and then some because 3 or 4 months before my name had to be renewed they couldnt bill the card on file ( I didnt want them too ) so they emailed and I ignored it…they suspended the domain pending email verification!

I had been tipped off to issues from the start when their website kept crashing or the forms kept forgetting what was going in to them…it took me multiple attempts to order the single name.  I then pointed the DNS as I wanted but nothing happened for 3 days…so I created a ticket and had a run around issue when finally they gave it turned on….I lost a couple weeks there.  It also then stopped working magically a week later and was down another week.  They also have Auto Opt In services you need to be watchful for…like email.

I had months of paid time that I didnt get from them … I was ignoring their promotional crap.  So they turned me off until I verified my email again.  Outrageous I immediately started the transfer process out.  Here are some more people’s Network Solutions stories…..the worst place to buy a domain name.

As I go through my SEO day I type the same addresses over and over to get to a collection of useful tools.  So I decide to post them as links once and for all, for my own benefit but also for others who may come here for a backlink indexer but find there isn’t one … but there is a list that includes one of the best.

A quick highlight of some of the tools and how I plan to build on this simple list.  First, I’ll address the second thing I noted…I plan to build the list out from its initial 52 to hopefully a hundred with the promise I’m not just adding crap tools or duplicate tools over and over.  Now as a highlight of some of the best tools on this list I’ll put some details in the coming weeks in a section below the list. What Would Google Cloud Need To Do To Catch Up To AWS And Azure?

Ease of use is one thing. I have clients that can benefit from cloud based solutions. They may have a typical hosting account with some name brand hosts but for various reasons I find myself getting annoyed and deciding I’m moving them to the cloud.

I move them to Google Cloud Platform but only temporarily because I know that when I leave them (I’m just a freelancer) they’ll be lost. If they decide they want to be in the cloud every single time I then move them to AWS. Why did I pick Google to begin with? Only one reason…the credit. That credit allows me to move them without them feeling pressured but when they make the decision to stick with the cloud they leave Google.

Why Is Google Cloud Not Where I Leave Them?

  1. Ever try to have a server on GCP with more than one IP address? – It is next to impossible compared with the ease of associating multiple IPs to an AWS server. Beyond the technical limitations of GCP they also don’t allow more than one IP address per zone. So I would have to use a load balancer if I wanted more than one server in the same zone. That second layer of steps exceeds the clients interest.
  2. Often they have WHM / cPanel servers and they require 2 IP addresses for the two required name servers. Google Cloud … I have to make the WHM with one IP then run off to another zone and make a second server thats DNS only but still meets the minimum requirements of cPanel….then I have to make a DNS cluster tieing the two together and I have found these clusters to be very tricky…often somehow falling apart and needing to be put back together. The client in the end just wanted one server. I can do that in about 2 hours total on AWS without additional servers.
  3. Restrictions – So lets say I make a GCP WordPress micro server. I let people signup and require them to respond to an email from the server. NO ONE ever responds to the email…well, its because GCP by default blocks all SMTP ports. So, if I want something as simple as email I have to go setup a mail relay through another service and guess how many clients eyes glaze over at this point? All.
  4. Too much reliance on Cloud SDK over simply putting it in the website. Again back to clients being able to use this after I leave them, if they cant do it in the web interface they cant do it. Too often the instructions in the help reference Cloud SDK and thats the end. If a client requires a full time cloud specialist because Google relies on Cloud SDK too much then I can’t leave an everyday client with them.
  5. Ever tried to SFTP into a server? AWS I pick an SSH key that Ive already added from previous servers and then in my SFTP client I add my connection settings and select the .pem file and I’m in. Google cloud there are just way more steps and issues. Here is a fun example … go to google and type “Google Cloud SSH” and see what Google suggests you are searching for…Google Cloud SSH Key, Google Cloud SSH Not Working, Google Cloud SSH Permissions, Google Cloud SSH Timeout …. that says volumes. Permission denied is basically the expected search from Google if you type a simple thing you will have to be able to do.

So those are my thoughts…its overly complex and drops the ball in an area that only a few people in most companies IT departments can understand.


I added this into UltimateSEO.org because it IS an SEO thing.  The speed and loading of your site has a big effect on your ranking.  I have improved a sites ranking from the average keyword in the 40s to the 20s by simply putting them on their own server.  Who wouldn’t want their keywords jumping like that and for about $30 a month.

Hostname On cPanel / WHM Server Resets To Project Name On Google Cloud Fix

So you made a WHM server on Google Cloud and before you get to use it suddenly its broken?  I feel your pain.  Not sure when this started but it seems Google Cloud auto writes over the hostname.  Usually not an issue but cPanel seems to rely upon this entry to the point when you type a FQDN like louisville.data502.com it changes to rubbish in a redirect and the site can’t be resolved.

You can see it from their site or I have the steps below.

To configure VPS deployments, many cloud hosting providers use the dhclient script, which includes the configuration of the instance’s hostname.

The dhclient script may not preserve the locally-configured hostname, so hosting providers use scripts to work around this issue. For example, Google Cloud Platform Services™ uses the google_set_hostname script.

The workaround scripts may interfere with WHM’s Change Hostname feature (WHM >> Home >> Networking Setup >> Change Hostname), which causes hostname configuration issues and a locked cPanel & WHM license.

The solution

To resolve this issue, you must create a dhclient exit hook script to set the hostname properly.
Create the set-hostname.sh file with the following contents in the /etc/dhcp/dhclient-exit-hooks.d/ directory, where hostname.example.com represents your server’s new hostname:

You can also create the file with the following command, where hostname.example.com represents your server’s new hostname: Note in the code below you should be sudo and hostname.example.com will need to be changed

mkdir -p /etc/dhcp/dhclient-exit-hooks.d/ && echo -ne ‘#!/bin/shnhostname hostname.example.comn/scripts/fixetchostsn’ > /etc/dhcp/dhclient-exit-hooks.d/zzz-set-hostname.sh && chmod +x /etc/dhcp/dhclient-exit-hooks.d/zzz-set-hostname.sh

OR You can make it in a drawn out 3 step process.

  1. #!/bin/sh
  2. hostname hostname.example.com
  3. /scripts/fixetchosts

That should keep the name as you intended.

Key Components & Services

There are two custom services running on the deployed machines that are essential for the solution to function properly. These services are ​gcs-sync ​(running on WordPress instances – both Admin and Content) and ​cloudsql-proxy​ (running on the SQL Proxy instances).

The ​gcs-sync​ service runs a script ​/opt/c2d/downloads/gcs-sync​ that, depending on the role the VM is assigned (Content or Admin), will check in with the GCS bucket tied to the deployment and determine if content needs to be pushed to or pulled from GCS. If you need to interact with the service, you can do so via ​systemctl​. For example:

systemctl stop gcs​-​sync

will kill the script checking GCS, and the node will not receive any updates that come from the Administrator Node. Conversely, if the service needs to be started you can do so with the following command:

systemctl start gcs​-​sync

The ​cloudsql-proxy​ service makes use of the ​Cloud SQL Proxy​ binary so you can connect to your Cloud SQL instance without having to whitelist IP addresses, which can change when instances are deleted and recreated in a Managed Instance Group. The Cloud SQL binary is located at ​/opt/c2d/downloads/cloud_sql_proxy​ and the script that executes the binary is located at ​/opt/c2d/downloads/cloudsql-proxy​. Like the service that runs ​gcs-sync​, it can be interacted with using ​systemctl​. Stopping the service can be done with:

systemctl stop cloudsql​-​proxy

At this point your instance will not be able to communicate with the Cloud SQL instance, and the application will not function. If you needed to manually start the service for any reason you can do so with the following command:

systemctl start cloudsql​-​proxy

SEO Tools: Visualize Pages And Their Interrelational Linkage

Anyone who knows me knows I love visualizations. I’ve been working on SEO strategies for a site and the beginning of any good strategy is understand the site and quality of its content. Some studies suggest 60% of people think in pictures…that is to say if I said the word “cat” some people will see a cat and some will see the letters cat. Its hard for visual people to grasp complex concepts such as “millions” its harder to produce that word in a visual way in your mind. Similarly when we think about a web site its often hard to grasp the links and relationship between a sites pages. Sure we can create a boring flow chart but it often has to be over simplified and lacks a good representation of the sites content.

Recently while working for https://pearlharbor.org I found a tool that created some really useful visualizations of the site and the sites pages with linkage between them. I believe the software limits its linkage to 10,000 which is astounding. The site offers information and Pearl Harbor tours while serving as a memorial that includes a page for all the survivors. My focus with this site is to make SEO recommendations and ensure the effective utilization of social media in improving site ranking.

The free plug for this software is Website Auditor you can use the free evaluation version for as long as you’d like, you just cant save or print anything. Its still something extraordinary for understanding a sites layout. In addition this software includes additional tools for site link building and so on.

I’m excited about my newly discovered free SEO tools. I’m going to make these images for any site I work on. While I want to improve SEO through increased authoritative external links its essential that these links land on a site that utilizes intelligent internal linkage.

There are a ton of SEO sites free tool and even more that aren’t free. Usually the free ones are just teasers for the paid tools. I’ve collected links to free tools that I have found relevance by using them. Beyond the tools to optimize a sites SEO its important to have at least a foundational understanding of what is SEO. It isn’t what it used to be, sites would simply pick the keywords they wanted to rank for and then repeat that keyword over and over sometimes at the bottom of a page or behind an image where online a search engine would find them. Keywords allowed gamification of rankings and Google stepped away from keywords focusing more on backlinks, links that pointed back to your site.

What are On-Page Ranking Factors?

On-page ranking factors can have a big impact on your page’s ability to rank if optimized properly. The biggest on-page factors that affect search engine rankings are:

Content of Page

The content of a page is what makes it worthy of a search result position. It is what the user came to see and is thus extremely important to the search engines. As such, it is important to create good content. So what is good content? From an SEO perspective, all good content has two attributes. Good content must supply a demand and must be linkable.

Good content supplies a demand:

Just like the world’s markets, information is affected by supply and demand. The best content is that which does the best job of supplying the largest demand. It might take the form of an XKCD comic that is supplying nerd jokes to a large group of technologists or it might be a Wikipedia article that explains to the world the definition of Web 2.0. It can be a video, an image, a sound, or text, but it must supply a demand in order to be considered good content.

Good content is linkable:

From an SEO perspective, there is no difference between the best and worst content on the Internet if it is not linkable. If people can’t link to it, search engines will be very unlikely to rank it, and as a result the content won’t drive traffic to the given website. Unfortunately, this happens a lot more often than one might think. A few examples of this include: AJAX-powered image slide shows, content only accessible after logging in, and content that can’t be reproduced or shared. Content that doesn’t supply a demand or is not linkable is bad in the eyes of the search engines—and most likely some people, too.

This URL clearly shows the hierarchy of the information on the page (history as it pertains to video games in the context of games in general). This information is used to determine the relevancy of a given web page by the search engines. Due to the hierarchy, the engines can deduce that the page likely doesn’t pertain to history in general but rather to that of the history of video games. This makes it an ideal candidate for search results related to video game history. All of this information can be speculated on without even needing to process the content on the page.

The following is a bad example of URL structure:

  • http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0468569

Unlike the first example, this URL does not reflect the information hierarchy of the website. Search engines can see that the given page relates to titles (/title/) and is on the IMDB domain but cannot determine what the page is about. The reference to “tt0468569” does not directly infer anything that a web surfer is likely to search for. This means that the information provided by the URL is of very little value to search engines.

URL structure is important because it helps the search engines to understand relative importance and adds a helpful relevancy metric to the given page. It is also helpful from an anchor text perspective because people are more likely to link with the relevant word or phrase if the keywords are included in the URL.

SEO Best Practice

Content pages are the meat of websites and are almost always the reason visitors come to a site. Ideal content pages should be very specific to a given topic—usually a product or an object—and be hyper-relevant.

The purpose of the given web page should be directly stated in all of the following areas:

  • Title tag
  • URL
  • Content of page
  • Image alt text

Here is an example of a well-laid-out and search engine–friendly web page. All of its on-page factors are optimized.

The content page in this figure is considered good for several reasons. First, the content itself is unique on the Internet (which makes it worthwhile for search engines to rank well) and covers a specific bit of information in a lot of depth. If a searcher had question about Super Mario World, there is a good chance, that this page would answer their query.

Aside from content, this page is laid out well. The topic of the page is stated in the title tag (Super Mario World – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia), URL (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_World), the page’s content (the page heading, “Super Mario World”), and within the alt text of every image on the page.

The following example is of a poorly optimized web page. Notice how it differs from the first example.

This figure shows a less search engine–friendly example of a content page targeting the term “Super Mario World.” While the subject of the page is present in some of the important elements of the web page (title tag and images), the content is less robust than the Wikipedia example, and the relevant copy on the page is less helpful to a reader.

Notice that the description of the game is suspiciously similar to copy written by a marketing department. “Mario’s off on his biggest adventure ever, and this time he has brought a friend.” That is not the language that searchers write queries in, and it is not the type of message that is likely to answer a searcher’s query. Compare this to the first sentence of the Wikipedia example: “Super Mario World is a platform game developed and published by Nintendo as a pack–in launch title for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.”. In the poorly optimized example, all that is established by the first sentence is that someone or something called Mario is on an adventure that is bigger than his or her previous adventure (how do you quantify that?) and he or she is accompanied by an unnamed friend.

The Wikipedia example tells the reader that Super Mario World is a game developed and published by Nintendo for the gaming system Super Nintendo Entertainment System–the other example does not. Search results in both Bing and Google show the better optimized page ranking higher.

An Ideally Optimized Web Page

An ideal web page should do all of the following:

  • Be hyper-relevant to a specific topic (usually a product or single object)
    • Include subject in title tag
    • Include subject in URL
    • Include subject in image alt text
    • Specify subject several times throughout text content
  • Provide unique content about a given subject
  • Link back to its category page
  • Link back to its subcategory page (If applicable)
  • Link back to its homepage (normally accomplished with an image link showing the website logo on the top left of a page)
